Prof. Ibrahim Abouleish (1937 – 2017) founded SEKEM in 1977, an initiative which fosters sustainable development towards a future where every human being can unfold their individual potential, where mankind lives together in social forms reflecting human dignity, and where all economic activities are conducted in accordance with ecological and ethical principles. As part of his vision, Prof. Abouleish established Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in 2009; the first university in the Middle East declaring sustainable development as its main guiding principal. Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development was inaugurated in 2012 with the aim to pioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to its students and to the Egyptian community at large. The non-profit oriented university includes the faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy and Drug Technology, Business and Economics, Physical Therapy, and Organic Agriculture. The degree programs offered at Heliopolis University address the concepts and theories of sustainable development through a multi-disciplinary holistic approach that integrates teaching, learning, research, and practice. In addition, all students participate in the cross-faculty Core Program which presents arts, music, theater, languages and much more, striving to unlock creativity and innovation. The program further enriches the learning experience by focusing on sustainability and human development. MISSION At Heliopolis University, we empower our students to be the champions of sustainable development in different spheres of life. We provide a fertile ground for new ideas that lead to further research and study. Our education combines teaching, research, and practice with a uniquely humanistic core program to develop curious and creative minds. OBJECTIVES Provide a high quality and challenging educational and research experience in which students can develop both individually and intellectually. Enable students to gain a broad understanding of the issues related to sustainable development and relevant scientific disciplines. Develop students’ key ethical values that will enable them to be competitive in the job market and/or manage their own enterprises with a vision to unceasingly contribute to community development. Help students identify and achieve their own individual goals and make a valuable contribution to their society and to the world at large. Develop independent persons immersed in the humanities who can identify and resolve problems creatively, individually, and communally. Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (HU) was inaugurated in 2012 with the aim to pioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to its students and to the Egyptian community at large. Sustainable development is one of the main goals that Egypt is striving to achieve in all aspects of life. Egypt has developed a sustainable development strategy as a foundation for its 2030 Vision. Through a renewed understanding that integrates teaching, learning, research, and practice, HU aims at empowering its students to be the future champions of sustainable development for Egypt and the world. Full Accreditation All degree programs are accredited by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and based on the credit hour system, compatible with the European credit transfer system (ECTS). HU has adopted the Project Competence Degree concept, whose crowning feature is the intertwining of theory with business needs. HU aims to develop social entrepreneurs who are able to face and overcome tomorrow’s challenges through innovation, collaboration, and technology. During the course of their studies, students will work on projects with partner companies using the problem-solving approach. Accordingly, they can acquire new competences through studying and applying new skills in a real-life environment. This also allows the students to focus on an area of their choice, keeping them highly motivated throughout their studies. In the long term this will allow personal success to be meaningfully linked with business success. The degree obtained is grounded in solid academic education coupled with practical experiences that simultaneously address business needs and inspire students to think innovatively. Partnerships with International Universities HU has unique partnerships with prominent international universities and institutions. These partnerships are remarkably enhancing the educational process in the university through two channels
