Pre-K & Kindergarten
Their Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are a haven for learning! Their mission is to teach students how to learn, how to approach school, friends, and adults, and how to start thinking for themselves and taking ownership. This is the first year where students truly start to understand that school is a place for learning. Their teachers provide a safe, fun, and loving atmosphere for students to develop emotionally, intellectually, and socially. Students are introduced to basic reading skills through rhymes, stories and poems. We strongly focus on oral communication in English while also developing English vocabulary, relationships between letters and sounds, counting and writing numbers, and holistic mathematical thinking.
The Elementary School program at FAS is from 1st grade through 5th grade.
We believe that students, from the beginning of Elementary School, must be active participants in their learning. In this, we teach what it means to “take ownership” of their learning and their behavior. Students are led by knowledgeable and loving staff in approaching different ways of learning, stepping outside the box, and taking risks in the classroom.
Learning is a process. They teach students to develop a “growth mindset” in which they learn to be “comfortable with being uncomfortable” in their academics. FAS uses Common Core as a framework for our curriculum in Mathematics and English Language, a rigorous curricular standard-based framework developed in the United States. Their focus is to understand where students are performing and utilize numerous interventions to both fill gaps and challenge students thinking to take them to higher levels. We encourage students to approach thinking in new ways and reflect on their learning. In addition to core classes, students also are instructed in Computer Tech, Music, Art, French, and Arabic.
FAS uses Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) to instill the values and behavioral expectations needed to succeed in a 21st century learner environment. In this, students learn and practice what appropriate behavior is, and are rewarded for these positive behaviors. Negative behaviors are redirected with a Discovery Model approach. They believe that having and developing good character is the essence of success, both in school and in life.
The Middle Years program at FAS is from 6th grade through 8th grade. Middle school is a time of self-discovery, cultural awareness, and understanding how decision-making affects our lives. Critical thinking starts to develop more at this age level, and students are pushed to think at greater depths of knowledge. This critical time in school shapes a student’s personality and sense of self. At FAS, we provide lots of opportunities for students to demonstrate their academic learning and at the same time, express their individuality.
Students are challenged in the core subjects and supported by both required and optional electives such as French, Arabic, Computer Tech, Music, Drama, and Art. By the end of 8th grade, students will have a better idea of the direction they will take in High School and where their strengths are, academically and socially.
Campus and Facilities
The whole building was architecturally designed to be a 21st Century school with all the modern facilities built into it such as an indoor swimming pool with changing rooms and spectator gallery, a magnificent theatre with lighting and sound systems along with full backstage facilities. Pupils can also enjoy using spacious art rooms and sound-proof music studios as well as science and IT laboratories. Every full-sized classroom has a smartboard, ceiling projector, A/Cs and wall-mounted fans. Apart from the two school libraries there are also resource centres in each classroom. The school has a large gallery area for exhibitions, fairs and meetings. Special care has been taken with transportation and catering to ensure students only get the best.
